折り紙は、色紙を折り、鶴や船、兜など、さまざまな形を作る日本の伝統的な遊びです。
平安時代の貴族や、鎌倉時代の武士の間では、贈り物を和紙で美しく包んだり、手紙をきれいに折りたたんだりする風習がありました。これが、折り紙のルーツのようです。
遊びとしての折り紙が発達したのは江戸時代。生産量の増加により和紙が安価で手に入るようになると、庶民が折り方そのものを楽しむようになったのです。
折り紙では、1枚の正方形の紙を使うのが一般的ですが、紙に切れ込みを入れたり、複数枚の紙を使用する場合もあります。
海外旅行や留学などの際に折り紙を持っていき、外国人に鶴などを折ってあげる日本人も多いようです。©2017 KODANSHA
