The Ninjas that often appear in Japanese period dramas were undercover fighters who were active from the Sengoku period to the Edo period. 日本の時代劇によく登場する忍者は、主に戦国時代から江戸時代にかけて活躍した隠密のこと。
大名や領主などの命令を受けて、情報収集や偵察、暗殺などを行いました。
忍者は変装が上手で、長時間水中に潜ったり、足音を立てずに歩くなど、忍術と呼ばれる特殊技術を身につけていました。
また、敵に投げる手裏剣や、地面にまいて追っ手を傷つける撒菱など、特有の道具を用いました。
忍者には各地に伊賀流や甲賀流などの流派があり、伊賀流の服部半蔵など有名な忍者もいます。
女性の忍者は「女」の文字を解体して「くノ一」と呼ばれました。
明治時代に警察や軍隊が創設されると、忍者はその役割を終え、警察官などになる人が多かったといわれています。©2017 KODANSHA
