漆を用いた工芸を漆芸と呼び、なかでも、木や紙に漆を塗り重ねて作る日本の漆器は、世界的に有名です。
16世紀から17世紀にかけて、欧米では漆器は「ジャパン」と呼ばれ、日本の特産品と考えられていました。
漆の木が自生していた日本では、縄文時代から漆が利用されていましたが、漆器生産が盛んになったのは江戸時代。
各藩が競って漆の採取や漆器の製造を行い、蒔絵や螺鈿、沈金など、漆器の装飾技術も発展しました。
日本には漆器産地が多く、福島県の会津漆器、福井県の越前漆器、石川県の山中漆器、和歌山県の紀州漆器は日本四大漆器と呼ばれています。
また、石川県の輪島塗は日本を代表する漆器として、国の重要無形文化財に指定されています。©2017 KODANSHA
