華道は、四季折々の花や草木などを花器に飾って鑑賞する、日本の伝統芸術。生け花とも呼ばれます。
華道には、花を飾るだけでなく、茶道のように、稽古を通じて礼儀作法を学ぶ側面もあります。
室町時代に床の間の飾り花として生け花が発達し、江戸時代に華道の名でも呼ばれるようになりました。
華道では草花を人間の命にたとえ、美しさと尊さを表現します。左右対称に飾る欧米のフラワーアレンジメントとは異なり、左右非対称に飾るのが華道の基本です。
華道を確立したとされる日本最古の流派である池坊をはじめ、日本には数百にものぼる華道の流派があります。
