特に日本家屋でよく見られるのが、窓の外や軒下に掛けられた、すだれやよしず。日光をさえぎり、風は通す、優れものの用具です。
風が吹くたびに涼しげな音を奏でる風鈴や、玄関先に水をまく打ち水も、涼しさを感じるための工夫です。
夏にはいたるところで、扇子や団扇であおいでいる人を見かけます。また、怪談や肝試しなどで背筋を凍らせるのも、涼を取る方法の一つ。
