商店にとって、目印となるのが看板。同じ効果を持つものとして日本人に馴染みが深いものが、のれんや幟、提灯です。
店先に掲げられるのれんは、日除けや目隠しの役割を果たすとともに、店が営業中であることを示します。
昭和20年頃までは、特に寿司屋などでは、食事をした客が汚れた手をのれんでふきながら店を出たことから、のれんが汚れていることが繁盛している店の証でした。
幟は、戦国時代に戦場で敵と味方を区別するために使われていました。縦長で文字を入れやすく、町なかで目立つため、現在では看板同様に重宝されています。
また、焼き鳥屋やおでん屋などは店先に赤い提灯を吊り下げることが多く、「赤提灯」といえば飲み屋のイメージとして定着しています。©2017 KODANSHA
