Traditional Japanese houses are made of wood and their roofs are covered with tiles.

日本の伝統的な家屋は木造で、屋根には瓦が敷き詰められています。部屋は畳敷きで、引き戸の一種である障子や襖で仕切られています。
木組みの枠に和紙を貼った障子は、自然光を取り入れるとともに、室内の保温も考慮した、優れものの仕切りです。
また、大きな家屋では各部屋を仕切る襖を取り外すと、広い部屋になる工夫が凝らされています。
そのほか布団などを収納する押し入れがあり、部屋の一角に花瓶や掛け軸を飾る床の間を設ける場合もあります。
なかには縁側が設置された家もあります。縁側は日向ぼっこをしたり、お茶を飲んだりして過ごす場所です。
