At one time in Japan, people ate nuts, fruit, and berries as snacks. It is said that this gave rise to what we now call confectionery.

日本では昔、人々が間食に木の実などを食べていた時代があり、これが菓子の起原といわれています。
室町時代以降、日本では茶の湯が流行しました。それに伴って和菓子はお茶の味を引き立てる役割を担い、お茶と一緒に提供されるものとして定着しました。現在でもその風習は息づいています。
お茶とともに出される菓子を「お茶請け」と呼びます。特に茶の湯で出される上生菓子は、製法にもこだわり、季節感も盛り込まれて、見た目にも美しいのが特徴です。
