夜空を彩る花火は、日本では夏の風物詩といわれ、毎年おもに7〜8月は全国各地で花火大会が開かれます。
日本で花火が作られるようになったのは、16世紀に鉄砲と火薬の製法が伝来して以降のこと。江戸時代には多くの花火師が腕を競い合った結果、日本には多くの種類の花火があります。
なかでも、隅田川の川開きで花火の技を競い合った「玉屋」と「鍵屋」の2大花火屋は有名です。
今でも打ち上げ花火が上がると、人々が「たまやー」「かぎやー」と声をかける場面が見られます。
また夏になると、ホームセンターやスーパーなどで、家族や友人たちと楽しむための手持ち花火も販売されます。
特に線香花火は、日本の夏の情緒を代表する花火として、昔も今も人気です。
