日本には6世紀半ばの飛鳥時代に、仏教とほぼ一緒に伝わりました。
平安時代の表情の柔和な仏像、鎌倉時代の力強い仏像など、仏像は時代によって様式が異なります。また、手のポーズにもいろいろな意味があります。
