朝の5時半前から競りが行われ、主に卸売業者や飲食店が仕入れを行う場内に対し、場外は一般の人でも気軽に買い物ができます。
調理具の専門店や鮮魚、乾物、肉、漬物などの食材に加え、寿司屋やどんぶり屋、ラーメン屋などを含む、約400店舗が集まっています。
本来は場外市場も、料理人や市場関係者が買い出しを行う場所だったため、扱っている商品は、どれもプロの目にかなったものばかり。
場外市場に一般客や観光客が増えたのは、1990年代後半といわれています。
場内市場は豊洲への移転が予定されていますが、場外市場は従来通り現在地で営業を続けていくようです。©2017 KODANSHA
