現在のような、冬に町や公園を彩る大掛かりなイルミネーションは、1981年に北海道札幌市の大通公園で始まったといわれています。
東京は特にイルミネーションスポットが豊富で、2016年には六本木がある港区では、30ヵ所以上でクリスマスイルミネーションが行われたといわれます。
