In Japan plum blossoms are known as a bloom that announces the coming of spring. 梅は桜より少し早く、毎年2月頃から花を咲かせ、日本では春の到来を告げる花として知られています。
平安時代以降の日本では、花といえば桜を指しますが、奈良時代より前の時代は花といえば梅のことでした。
日本には梅園に限らず各地に梅の名所があり、桜の花見のシーズンに先立って梅祭りが行われます。
東京近郊では茨城県の偕楽園が有名です。
また、平安時代の学者の菅原道真は、とても梅を愛したといわれ、道真を祀る天神社は、梅とゆかりが深い神社として知られます。
そのため、京都の北野天満宮や東京の湯島天神など全国の天神社では、毎年多くの人が集まり、人々は梅を愛で、茶会や奉納演芸などを楽しみます。©2017 KODANSHA
