In Japan, they say that the stars "Orihime" (Vega) and "Hikoboshi" (Altair), which face each other across the Milky Way, meet once a year, on July 7th. This day is called Tanabata. 日本では7月7日は、天の川をはさんで向かい合う「織姫」と「彦星」が年に一度、会える日とされています。
この日は七夕と呼ばれ、願い事を書いた短冊を竹に吊るし、星に祈る風習があります。
七夕は、古代中国の伝説と行事、さらに日本古来の信仰が結びついて生まれたといわれます。短冊を竹に吊るす風習は、江戸時代に始まりました。
七夕の時期には各地で祭りが行われ、子どもたちは幼稚園や保育園、学校などで竹の飾り付けをします。
また、商店街などにも短冊を吊るした竹が飾られます。
日本人の間でもあまり知られていませんが、七夕にはそうめんを食べるのが習わし。7月7日は「そうめんの日」とされています。
