夏祭りの目的は、先祖の霊を供養するもの、台風除けを願うもの、暑さに負けず無病息災を願うものなどさまざまです。
多くの祭りでは神輿が町なかを練り歩き、花火が打ち上げられ、人々が踊り、夜店が並ぶなどの光景が見られます。
日本人の多くは、このような夏祭りには浴衣で出かけます。
祇園祭のほかに有名な夏祭りには、青森県のねぶた祭、宮城県の仙台七夕まつり、大阪の天神祭、徳島県の阿波おどり、高知県のよさこい祭りなどがあります。
