長さ約1.5kmの大通公園ほか全3会場に200以上の雪の彫刻が展示され、毎年200万人以上の観光客を集めます。
この雪まつりは、1950年に地元の中高生たちが6つの雪像を大通公園に設置したのが始まりです。
敗戦のショックが色濃かった当時の暗いムードを吹き飛ばすために行われたイベントでしたが、好評につき毎年行われるようになりました。
雪像に使われる雪は札幌市内や近郊から運ばれ、その量は5tトラック約6500台分といわれています。
1974年からは海外のチームも参加する国際雪像コンクールも始まり、いまでは国際色豊かなイベントとなっています。©2017 KODANSHA
