この神社の最大の祭事である御柱祭は、日本三大奇祭の一つといわれます。
6年に一度、寅年と申年の4月から5月にかけて行われる御柱祭は、社殿を造り替えるため、山から切り出した巨木を、氏子たちが人力で境内まで運ぶ独特の神事。
祭りには20万人以上が参加し、1本の木に2000〜3000人が群がって動かします。
巨木と人々が一緒に斜面を滑り落ちる「木落とし」、川に浸かって運ぶ「川越し」、町中を練り歩き、境内に柱を建てる「里曳き」などの行事が行われます。
御柱祭が開催される年は、諏訪地方の町は祭り一色になり、結婚式や葬式、家の改築などを控える風習もあるそうです。©2017 KODANSHA
