November 23rd is a public holiday in Japan called "Labor Thanksgiving Day". 日本では、11月23日は「勤労感謝の日」と呼ばれる国民の祝日です。
第二次世界大戦以前は、この日は新嘗祭と呼ばれる祭日でした。新嘗祭とは、その年の農作物の収穫を感謝する儀式です。
新嘗祭の起源は不明ですが、日本最古の歴史書である『日本書紀』には、飛鳥時代に始まったと記され、奈良時代に作られた『万葉集』にも新嘗祭に関する和歌があります。
新嘗祭は、皇室の儀式の中でも特に重要な儀式の一つとされています。この日、宮中では、天皇陛下が神々に初穂をお供えになり、感謝の祈りをされたあと、初穂をお召し上がりになります。
