なまはげとは、怠け者をこらしめるために神から遣わされた、恐ろしい顔をした鬼のことです。
大晦日の晩、青年たちが鬼の面をつけ、「親の言うこど聞がね子はいねがー(親の言うことを聞かない子はいないか?)」などと叫びながら、家々を訪ねます。
見つかると連れていかれてしまうため、子どもたちはなまはげが訪れると隠れます。
このようなことから、言うことを聞かない子どもには「なまはげが来るぞ」とおどして、言うことを聞かせることもあります。
子どもにとっては恐ろしいなまはげも、災いをはらい、豊作や豊漁をもたらす神の使者と考えられているため、なまはげが訪れた家では、酒や料理をふるまってていねいにもてなします。©2017 KODANSHA
