Compared to cherry blossom viewing in spring, observing autumn leaves is referred to as momijigari "hunting for autumn leaves". 日本の秋は、木々の葉が赤や黄に色づく季節。
日本には桜の名所と同様に、紅葉の名所が全国各地にあります。秋の紅葉シーズンになると、そうした場所には多くの人が押し寄せます。
春の花見に対して、一般に、紅葉を観賞することを「紅葉狩り」と呼びます。紅葉を愛でる様子を、獲物を追う「狩猟」になぞらえた古くからの表現です。
紅葉狩りは平安貴族の遊びとして始まり、江戸時代には庶民の間に広まりました。現在のように、紅葉の名所を訪れるために旅行をする人が増えたのは、明治時代です。
紅葉の時期は、各地の名所で紅葉祭りが行われ、有名寺社の中には、紅葉シーズンに合わせて庭園や寺宝の公開などを行うところもあります。©2017 KODANSHA
