万灯会は奈良時代に始まったもので、現在は日本各地で行われています。寺院や墓地などで行われるのが一般的ですが、神社で行われる場合もあります。
なかでも、奈良県の東大寺や薬師寺、和歌山県の高野山などで行われるものは、規模も大きく荘厳で特に有名です。
万灯会とは、言ってみれば、先祖に捧げるイルミネーションのようなもの。万灯会の夜、柔らかい光に照らされた寺院や神社の境内は、日頃とは異なった幻想的な空間に生まれ変わります。©2017 KODANSHA
