送り火は、お盆に帰ってきた先祖の魂を供養した後、再びあの世に送り出す仏教の行事です。
京都では8月16日の夜、京都を囲む5つの山に送り火を焚くことから、五山送り火と呼ばれています。山肌に浮かび上がる送り火を見て、人々は手を合わせます。
五山送り火の由来や歴史ははっきりしませんが、地元の人々が長年にわたって受け継いできました。
送り火を焚いた後の炭は魔除けになるといわれ、京都では玄関にこの炭を掲げる家庭も見られます。
また、水や酒の入った盃に送り火を映して飲むと、無病息災に暮らせるという言い伝えもあります。©2017 KODANSHA
