八坂神社の祭礼である祇園祭は、疫病退散を願って行われた行事がルーツで、1100年以上の歴史があります。
祇園祭には数多くの行事がありますが、特に有名なのが「山鉾巡行」です。
山鉾とは巨大な山車のことで、飾りが豪華なことから「動く美術館」として知られています。祇園祭では33もの山鉾が登場し、京都の中心部を練り歩きます。
また、山鉾巡行の前3日間の、「宵山」の日には、すべての山鉾が町なかに勢揃いし、訪れた人たちは一部の山鉾に上がることができます。
お囃子が流れるなか、山鉾が多くの提灯をともしてたたずむ姿はとても幻想的な体験です。©2017 KODANSHA
