In the Edo period, the area near the present Asakusa was called Yoshiwara. It was home to a red-light district, or yukaku. 江戸時代、現在の浅草付近は吉原といわれ、遊郭と呼ばれる遊び場がありました。
遊郭で働く女性を遊女と呼び、その中でも位の高い者が「おいらん」です。
おいらんは通常は置屋と呼ばれる場所で待機しており、客に呼ばれると、指定の揚屋まで出向きました。
この時、おいらんが供の者を従えて通りを華やかに行き来する様子は、おいらん道中と呼ばれ、多くの見物客を集めました。
この様子を再現したのが、浅草で毎年春に行われている「江戸吉原おいらん道中」です。
2003年に吉原の料亭が始めたものですが、現在は地域の人々の手で行われており、おいらんに扮した地元の住民たちが、豪華な衣装で浅草界隈を練り歩きます。©2017 KODANSHA
