The Aoi Matsuri (Hollyhock Festival) held every year on May 15th is one of the three major festivals of Kyoto alongside the Gion Matsuri and Jidai Matsuri. 毎年5月15日に行われる葵祭は、祇園祭、時代祭と並ぶ京都三大祭りの一つ。世界遺産に登録されている下鴨神社と上賀茂神社の祭礼です。
6世紀に風水害に見舞われた際、神の怒りを鎮めるため、鈴をつけた馬を走らせる祭りを行ったことが葵祭の起源。平安時代には、祭りといえば葵祭のことを指しました。
葵祭の見どころは、平安装束に身を包んだ総勢500人からなる行列。すべての人々が、葵の葉の飾りをつけています。
京都御所を出発した行列は下鴨神社を経て、上賀茂神社へと、約8kmの道のりを練り歩きます。それぞれの神社では舞が奉納され、神馬の引き回しなどの儀式が行われます。
