その元祖は、平安・鎌倉時代に宮中や貴族の宴の際、使用人にふるまった「屯食」だといわれます。
江戸時代には、現在のように海苔を巻くスタイルのおにぎりが登場し、花見や花火など、庶民の行楽のお供として定着しました。
おにぎりが三角形をしているのは、山の神へのお供えにする際、山の形を表したからだともいわれています。
ただし関西では、俵形のおにぎりが主流だったようです。
1970年代までは、おにぎりは家庭で作るものでしたが、現在ではコンビニの主力商品になっています。
コンビニのおにぎりには手軽に海苔を巻けるパッケージが採用されており、海苔のパリッとした食感も楽しめます。©2017 KODANSHA
