江戸時代には武士や役人の給料、農民の税は主に米で支払われ、日本の祭りの多くは、米の豊作を願い、収穫を祝うことから始まっています。
食糧難に見舞われて白米が少なくなった第二次世界大戦後、麦飯などの代用食に対し、白米は「銀シャリ」と呼ばれるようになったようです。
「銀シャリ」という言葉の由来は定かではありませんが、米粒を釈迦の骨である舎利になぞらえたとする説もあるほど、当時の白米は尊いもので、贅沢品だったのでしょう。
現在、一般家庭では銀シャリという言葉を日常的には使いませんが、おいしい米の代名詞として、「ご飯」の代わりに「銀シャリ」とメニューに書く飲食店もあるようです。©2017 KODANSHA
