About this listen
The New York Times Best-seller: Outgunned and outmanned on the Pacific Ocean, a small American fleet defied the odds and turned the tide of World War II.
On the morning of June 4, 1942, doom sailed on Midway. Hoping to put itself within striking distance of Hawaii and California, the Japanese navy planned an ambush that would obliterate the remnants of the American Pacific fleet. On paper, the Americans had no chance of winning. They had fewer ships, slower fighters, and almost no battle experience. But because their codebreakers knew what was coming, the American navy was able to prepare an ambush of its own.
Over two days of savage battle, American sailors and pilots broke the spine of the Japanese war machine. The United States prevailed against momentous odds; never again did Japan advance. In stunning detail, Walter Lord, the number one New York Times best-selling author of Day of Infamy and A Night to Remember, tells the story of one of the greatest upsets in naval history.

Wonderful book spoiled by the narration
This is my pick of the books written on the battle of Midway, knocking the Craig Symons which I had loved and listened to twice.
However I almost did not get far. ln fact, I started and gave up in exasperation twice. I liked the material but could not abide the sub-standard narration. I found it a turn-off to have uniform-tone, uniform-stanza reading by someone clearly not a professional narrator and who does not have a voice suited to the task.
On the third go, I persevered. It did not mean I liked the narration better, I just got better at tolerating the narration if I wanted to finish this compelling book.

Great detail, awful narration!
A marathon history which needed to be told but not by this narrator. The timbre of his voice rarely changed and passages which should have been exciting were ruined. I persevered to the end but it was hard work.
