About this listen

The tides of fate are shifting.

The banished have returned, and they have set their eyes on the walls of solitude. Zanna Alpenwood, a powerful mage, and 200 aged and forgotten sparkers are all that stand between the banished and the nation of Haltveldt.

With time running out, Zanna is forced to reach out to her estranged daughter, Calene, and set her on an impossible quest. In doing so, Calene must decide between her masters and her own conscience as she teams up with unlikely allies to forge their way over land and sea. Will they arrive in time to save the fortress of solitude from destruction?

Only one thing is certain. Ruin is assured if solitude falls.

I could not put this down

A Dark Epic Fantasy that I inhaled!!! All 270 pages of this book were fantastic and I need the rest of this series The Empire of Ruin now please!!

It's hard to summarise this story without either giving away the parts I loved about this or influencing how you see each of the 3 races. Let me then just say In Solitude's Shadow is well crafted and at times poetic in its prose, and leave you with these quotes:

"War fed more war. Evil nourished Evil"

"It's your choice. No one can force you, The spark is yours, and so are your decisions. Live by them"

These are not my favourite quotes but they are superb. You just have to read it. It's so good.

Told in multiple POVs each was unique, captivating and flawed. Just how I like 'em. The consequences of each action are very real and can not only affect the ones making the decisions but those around them too. YESSSSSSS!!!!
Though the magic is well fleshed out, I feel like Green has only scratched the surface of what is to come throughout this series and I can not wait.

Ashley Griffin did a superb job of the narration. Great characters and pace (I listen on 1.5x speed). There are a few times when fans or outside noise can be heard on the audio track but I doubt that would be heard if not listening loud on headphones and it really didn't bother me enough to take me out of the story.

Lovers of Dark Fantasy will love this (obvs) but it also has some grim elements to it as well that I loved. How Green packed such a punch in so few pages is insane. My mind is blown and I am shooketh

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
