Publisher's Summary

Mitch is on a last-ditch drive to save his career with the Scottish Institute of Archaeology after his ex-lover Lewis stole his research into the legendary Pictish saints. Mystical pre-Celtic statues are hidden somewhere on mist-wreathed Dove Island. Now Mitch is tearing out to the coast in the hope of reaching the saints before his treacherous ex can stake a claim. At his side is his devoted assistant, Owen. Owen adores Mitch, but he's the quiet, loyal type. Despite himself, Mitch is still dazzled by memories of flamboyant Lewis - and in danger of destroying his newfound happiness with Owen. As the race for the saints intensifies, Mitch is losing perspective. Will he learn how to appreciate the love of a good man before he plunges himself and Owen too far into the deadly mysteries of Dove Island?

So good I cried

For such a short story I was amazed at how quickly and in depth I was hauled into the story line and charecters.

Story telling at its best and narrated beautifully, I really did cry (I'm such a sap)

Whew, beautifully written but exquisitely painful!

I felt like Harper Fox found a sore spot and just … kept … pushing. Academic historian Mitch is still smarting from being shafted by his EX-lover and fellow archeologist Lewis, who stole his research, stole his funding, and dumped him. Lewis is an arrogant user and the worst of it is, Mitch would still take him back in a second, despite Mitch’s loyal and dependable new boyfriend, Owen. As Mitch and Owen race Lewis’s well-funded team (Indiana Jones style) to be the first to uncover statues of legendary Pictish saints, Mitch will be constantly pulled back into Lewis’s toxic orbit, hurting Owen in the process. This was a fantastic premise with gripping tension and beautiful descriptions. Harper Fox writes wonderfully flawed characters but it doesn’t make for an easy ride. My only peeves were her usual abrupt, open-ended ending and the magical realism. I like my stories to either embrace the supernatural totally or avoid it totally. I find magical realism unsatisfying because the magical events may or may not have actually happened and that was the case here. UK voice artist Tim Gilbert is excellent on the audiobook!
