THE TOP FIVE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

In 1914, war feels far away to Henry Gaunt and Sidney Ellwood. They're too young to enlist, and anyway, Gaunt is fighting his own private battle - an all-consuming infatuation with the dreamy, poetic Ellwood - not having a clue that his best friend is in love with him too.

When Gaunt's mother asks him to enlist, he signs up immediately, relieved to escape his overwhelming feelings. But Ellwood and their classmates soon follow him to the front. Ellwood and Gaunt find love in the trenches – but just as war brought them together, it can tear them apart…
An epic, unforgettable love story between two soldiers in the First World War, In Memoriam is a breath-taking debut.

Glorious

A great novel; devastating, exquisitely wrought, read and researched. It’s a love story of two posh gay soldiers set during WWI and it is sheer perfection. Bravo!

Moving and real

Beautifully written and read. So sad but a true account of the horrors faced by so many young men and families. I would highly recommend this book.

A subject handled with great honesty.

Slow burner, as can be all excellent literary novels. And then, snap, you’re in. Beautiful writing. Excellent narration.

A love story during a brutal, inhumane war.

Thank you for this wonderful love story Alice Winn. During terrible times, when such love was illegal and socially unacceptable, this story brims with hope and a deep optimism for something better. Great storytelling, authentic characters - I loved this book!

Love and death in War

An exquisite tale of love between young men, from boarding school days in England to the trenches of World War One. The author has captured both the tenderness of love and the ugliness of war. An excellent book. The narration is also excellent. This is my favourite audiobook of the last year.
