Publisher's Summary

Intriguing, gripping and believable, Tony Jones has used worldwide political history to create a second sensational thriller.

In 2005, Marin Katich, living in Croatia under an alias, is being watched. Before the year is out, he has been assaulted, arrested, charged with serious war crimes and locked up in Scheveningen Prison in The Hague, waiting for his case to come before the International War Crimes Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

In Sydney, Anna Rosen, a freelance journalist, is sent photos on her computer of a man she knows to be dead - gunned down in a brutal ambush in Bosnia over a decade ago. A man she'd once loved but who had betrayed her. Is it possible that the photos really are of Marin Katich? And if so, what the hell had happened in 1992?

From Croatia to The Hague to Bosnia and Herzegovina to Sydney, Anna and Marin's intertwined history fuels her determination to tear apart, piece by piece, his secrets, while continuing to keep her own.

In a dangerous pursuit of justice and revenge, navigating the murky world of national and international secret agencies and those who would still be warlords, Anna fights for what she believes in and for those she loves.

Tony Jones blurs the lines between fiction and political reality, creating an intriguing and gripping thriller.

Amazing 5 stars

Brilliant, five stars. Easily one of the best books I have read in a decade. I have never heard a narrator this good. I am in awe at the research and the plot so beautifully interwoven with cultural and historical context. Tony Jones, you have a new number one fan.

Beautiful narration of a dark story

Jenny Seedsman does a wonderful job of bringing this novel to life. Tony Jones shines a journalist’s well trained light into dark corners of Croatian and Australian history without forgetting his job as a novelist to both entertain and to challenge. Very well done. Thank you.

Fabulous story

What a great read. The wall at the centre of this book is not written about very much. Australia’s involvement in it is interesting as told through the lives of the lead characters. I couldn’t put it down. So well written, and so well read

Fascinating foray into the Balkans

I loved this moving, well-researched story which brought the tragic history of the Balkans alive. Focussing on the main characters, an Australian Jewish journalist and a Croatian - Australian who met in Sydney as young University students during the Vietnam moratorium in the early 70s, this book highlights the generational trauma which is the ongoing legacy of the former Yugoslavia. This book left me feeling sad but a whole lot better informed about the political machinations in Australia and the countries which were briefly Yugoslavia. I loved visiting Croatia (my father in law was Croatian), it’s a stunningly beautiful place and I look forward to one day returning to the Balkans with a deeper appreciation for its history.

Brilliant

This is an amazing insight into one of the most powerful wars of the 20th century. What atrocities were committed for the most absurd reasons.
Why we, the majority, will never understand wars related to religion.
Well written, in my opinion. Well narrated.

Great mix of history and fiction.

Like TJ’s earlier book ‘The 12th Man’ this story sets a fictional drama amid historical facts of the Yugoslav recent war using Australian characters. . Well read, gripping and believable. Looking forward to future TJ novels.

Fabulous

I thought this was a terrific book and the narration was superb. Although it was a follow up to the Twentieth Man, which I also enjoyed, it can easily be read as a stand alone story. It was a fast paced political thriller based around real events and a sad reminder of the Yugoslav War. A great story

Outstanding portrayal of a complex political subject

If you have any interest in the dark complexities of the Balkans, you'll find this book fascinating. Even if you don't, it is an exceptional read and very well performed. I was particularly impressed with the portrayal of the main characters. So refreshing to come across well-drawn female characters written by a man. Highly recommend both author and narrator.

Best Australian Historical Political Novel

Book itself is beautifully written. However Jenny Seedsman’s performance of it was fabulous. Jenny is an artist & brought movement & colour to the text. This is book 2 by Tony Jones and continues the story told in book 1. They can be read independently. Book 1 is good. Book 2 is sensational. The human story is fascinating with good character development. The political context is very well researched and integral to the human story. Before I had finished it I went looking for Tony Jones next. I hope it’s in production.
The performance of this book demonstrated for me the difference which an artist can make to the story telling. Enjoy
