About this listen

The first of Homer's great epic poems, the Iliad portrays the final days of the Trojan war. The Iliad has stood the test of time and is still one of (it not the) best depictions of ancient warfare. It is an essential precursor to the infamous journey of Odysseus.

Translated and Narrated by Stanley Lombardo. Introduction by Susan Sarandon.

Critic Reviews

"Lombardo's Iliad both sings to 21st century ears and holds true to Homer's original vision; the blind bard would be proud." ( Publishers Weekly)

A classic epic

The Iliad is an epic tale that, while sometimes repetitive, offers a fascinating glimpse into ancient storytelling. The poetic style and grand battles reminded me at times of the Old Testament, and I enjoyed the overall narrative. It’s also an interesting look at how language and literature were structured in the past. Though it took me two tries to get through, I’m glad I stuck with it. A worthwhile read for those curious about classic literature. My Rating 3.4/5

translation and performance are superb

I have found the Iliad hard work on previous reads, and never sure that I had absorbed the key moments. this translation is so direct in it's choice of words and rhythm, I found myself moved to tears at several points

Sorrow for lost sons

I was sad for the loses that both sides endured. Yet captivated in the story that Homer has left us
