Tuttavia la divisione definitiva dell'Impero, quel processo di erosione interna ed esterna che già da anni andava consumando la parte occidentale, aumentò fino a raggiungere l'apice nel 476 d.C., quando Odoacre depose l'ultimo imperatore, Romolo Augustolo, segnando la fine dell'Impero romano d'Occidente.
