About this listen

“At long last, even gods will know regret....”

Agnes Manteo now bears her father’s sentient Djao sword, along with a terrible revelation - the gods are charlatans, ancient sorcerers who draw their strength from the suffering of humanity. She and her Syraeic companions have but one duty: to track down those pretenders and end their reign of cruelty and lies, no matter the cost. To that end, the magical blade - mighty, single-minded Szaa’da’shaela - won’t allow any wavering of their commitment.

But the empire is in turmoil with the sudden passing of its undying queen. Noble houses clash and threaten civil war, murderous barbarians mass on the frontier in preparation for a bloody invasion, and all feel the aching void left by the clergy, whose temples were devastated by a great fire. Can the kingdom survive, should Agnes succeed in tearing away its very foundations? And if she fails, what might sorcerers with nearly godlike powers do to exact their revenge?

Idols Fall is the thrilling conclusion to the compelling Iconoclasts trilogy.

Maintaining excellence

A very fine ending to a very good trilogy. I'll be keeping an eye out for Mike Shel's next works.

Weakest of the series.

It's such a shame that this series ended as it did. The first book had me completely hooked into this world and it's characters and I particularly binged the first 2 novels.

This one I really struggled with. I'm no expert in literature but it just felt disjointed with random events and side stories getting put in that didn't make any sense. The ending felt rushed and ended a bit too abruptly for my liking. It's almost like the author didn't know how to end the series.

Many of the characters were unlikable or became unlikable from there previous depictions in the series. Others were just.... there, they were completely unnecessary yet we are told they matter.

For a book about the death of gods you would think it would it explore the theological repercussions of that but it's very very minimal. Even when one of the main characters loses their faith and has to find a way to deal with it, it happens "off screen" and you never get any idea how they coped apart knowing they had a talk with another character but that's all you find out.

The narrator was on point again with this one though so props to them.

Overall a dissapointing ending(?) to a series that started out very strong but ended up tired, bloated and just wanting to go home to bed.
