About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Discover the haunting, heartbreaking post-apocalyptic tale of female friendship and intimacy set in a deserted world.

Deep underground, 39 women are kept in isolation in a cage. Aboveground, a world awaits. Has it been abandoned? Devastated by a virus?

Watched over by guards, the women have no memory of how they got there, no notion of time and only vague recollection of their lives before. But, as the burn of electric light merges day into night and numberless years pass, a young girl - the 40th prisoner - sits alone and outcast in the corner.

Soon she will show herself to be the key to the others' escape and survival in the strange world that awaits them aboveground. The woman who will never know men.

Introspective and curious

This book made me think deeply about life, what it means to be alive and the concept of time. It caused me to query my perception of time, community, purpose, and life overall. It felt melancholic and bleak, but provided a way of reflecting on our current life and reassessing how we live and why

holy heartbreaking brilliance

the prose is just beautiful, and the narration gives it such warmth and life, and is a true testament to the work.

The story is unlike anything I have ever read. I have never felt so simultaneously hopeful and broken.

This, I think, is my one perfect book.

Fascinating and thought provoking

An unusual read. If you like to read books that leave you with existential questions, this one is for you. More than just a novel, this book leaves the reader ruminating on life, coming of age, womanhood and the nature of aloneness for long after it has been finished.

Haven’t read another book like it. As far as I am concerned this is a must-read, and the performance was great - allowed me to disappear into the book as though I was reading the words off the page myself. Excellent.

The pace and performance of the narrating was perfect. I wouldn’t change a thing about this audio book.

SKIP THE INTRO

The 15 min intro spoiled literally every event in the book and there are not that many. It is a great summary but recommend you listen to at the end after you’ve finished the actual book

Book itself is a really interesting contradiction. So minimal but so much happens in the nothing. I liked it but can’t explain why bc there’s nothing. The lack of explanation is a bit frustrating/unsatisfying but I think that is the point - the whole book is about wanting and what keeps you going when there’s nothing. You live a version of what the narrator experiences but in 6 hrs not 60 years..
