Publisher's Summary

The biggest debut of 2024 and a hilarious mystery with a killer hook. Perfect for fans of Knives Out and Only Murders in the Building.

FRANCES ALWAYS SAID SHE'D BE MURDERED...

SHE WAS RIGHT.

In 1965, when Frances Adams was seventeen, a fortune teller told her that one day she'd be murdered. Thus began a lifetime of trying to prevent the crime that would be her eventual demise.

No one took Frances seriously for sixty years - until, of course, she was murdered. But for Frances, being the village busybody was a form of insurance. She'd spent a lifetime compiling dirt on every person she met, just in case they might turn out to be her killer. In the heart of her sprawling country estate lies an eccentric library of detective work, where the right person could step in and use her findings to solve her murder.

When her great-niece Annie arrives from London and discovers that Frances' worst fear has come true, Annie is thrust into her great-aunt's last act of revenge against her sceptical friends and family. Frances' will stipulates that the person who solves her murder inherits her millions, and she's challenged a group that includes Annie to prove to the world that Frances was right all along about her future.

Can Annie unravel the mystery and find justice for Frances, or will digging up the past lead her into the path of the killer?

Cozy Crime

Nice and cozy, not very taxing. Exactly what I expected. It's not the best novel I've ever read, but it didn't need to be.

Misrepresented

I had to go back and re-read the title details. ‘Hilarious’ !!??! I don’t think so. This book could have been so great - the premise sounded so interesting and lent itself to comedy. I didn’t find joy in even one character. So disappointing.

Delivered as promised

Quite enjoyed the work of the reader in giving character to the characters. Good fun, nicely played finale.

A pleasure to find an author I haven't read and really anticipate her next work.

A cool concept with real mystery that is cleverly intertwined and bolstered by every character she has included. Definitely read this if you like character driven mystery.

Disappointing waste of a good idea

another author trying to copycat Richard Osman's quirky crime and falling so short. I wish this book delivered on even half of what it promised, then maybe it wouldn't have felt like such a waste of time. Im so bored by stories that focus on a weird instalove of main characters when there's little to love about them - Frances is fine, but she's just some girl in the village, yet everyone's in love with her to the point of obsession? Annie's actually the pits as a character, her insistance that she's a writer is really irritating, and her backpack full of empty notebooks is obnoxious. The author can keep telling me how clever Annie thinks she is but everything actually on the page shows that she's actually too stupid to live. The performances are fine but there's something wrong with audio itself with weird long pauses, mispronunciations and lines that sound cut off completely.

Nice: easy listening

Story that is well narrated, easily followed (you don't need to concentrate to follow what is happening) pleasant story. Cosy crime at its best. I won't be on tenterhooks, but I will look at the next in series.

What a find!

Brilliant first novel. 2 twisty plots combined with a tense climax to bring them together. It hooked me from the first page. So many wonderful flawed characters. Can’t wait for the sequel.
