Clarissa Pinkola Estés
About this listen
Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés Presents Volume Five of the Dangerous Old Woman Series
”What makes an elder, a heartfelt spirit, a clear mind, a talented heart, one who is young while old and old while young, an activist for the Soul? Is it formulae, schemas, lexicons? It could be. But also, and often more so, I think it is very like the flowering of the trees in the forest, as we gather more years: we straggle and stride onward in our better learned ways to give out even more seeds for new life, and to blossom wildly in so doing for self and others … The old ones are yet traveling underground and overland toward us as we meet one more time: La Vidente, the Seer; La Que Sabe, the Knowing Woman; La Levantadora, the Lifter of Curses—the Dangerous Old Woman in her many likenesses calls to you to 'get down to business.'” (Clarissa Pinkola Estés, PhD)
How to Be an Elder presents the culmination of Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés' masterwork, inviting us to “come into our own as wiser and wild souls” through six sessions of teachings, stories, poetry, and blessings. In this fifth and final volume of Dr. Estés' landmark series, we will explore how it is that through the gathering of our years we become a beautiful refuge for ourselves, our Souls, and for those who come after us.
“Did I mention, dear brave souls,” reminds Dr. Estés, “that you came with all the seedlings needed to do your work, to take your venerable places in life? Now is the just-right time, like Sleeping Beauty, to break the enchantment, to truly awaken and awaken others, as either a rookie Dangerous Old Woman, or a mid-career Dangerous Old Woman, or as Crone with Crown complete!”

A Book That Has Helped My Heart
Upon listening to your book I feel I finally have my place in the world....a sense of belonging...and understanding of the importance of my role. I work as the cook in a sheep shearing team in Australia....my day starts at 4 am where I cook breakfast and ends at 8.30 pm when I set up for the next days breakfast....I am the hub.....the matriach.....of whatever rough, ramshackle building we may be sleeping in at the time. I have worked in the shearing sheds but am getting too old now. The cooking is easier on my body. We live as gypsies. Moving from camp to camp. We often have children with us and most of us in our 'family' have come from a difficult path. Your book made me realise why I am here and that I need my soft, slightly overweight midriff...for that is where a child must rest its head when they deem the world has been unfair. That the food I make with deep love and pride is important. A sweet treat I have cooked can help a child feel loved and the slow cooked food I cook, makes the workers of the team strong and healthy. I have to be wily and clever to produce good meals from my stores. That when different ones come and sit and talk to me quietly they know I will not repeat what is said....and that even strong men who shear 200 sheep a day need an old ladies ears to hear their story and help to solve a worrying problem. I know too that it is not all sweetness and light for when they get too drunk and do not kill the sheep I need to feed us, I have to yell and swear at them, waving my wooden spoon and making very serious threats as I stand at my small 4'10" , wearing an apron....I am truly a force to be reckoned with for within a day, quartered meat lands on my kitchen bench. My kitchen is my domain and I rule it strictly.... everyone who enters it, enters with respect and asks before they touch anything at all. Your book has given me a great sense of peace and acceptance of a role I have only recently drifted into through becoming weaker in my body. For that I thank you Clarissa. You and your gift of writing are a true blessing.
