About this listen
Josiah Erickson wants to be a movie star. The problem with that is so does half of Los Angeles. But he's on his way, what with memorable roles as a TV show background cadaver and a guy in a commercial for herpes medication. All he needs is his big break. And that break may come in the form of a novelist who goes by the enigmatic name of Q-Bert.
Q-Bert, who is ready to make his directorial debut in a film Josy would be perfect for. Q-Bert, who Josy may or may not have a friend-crush on, and potentially something more. Being demisexual can be confusing.
From the City of Angels to the small mountain town of Abby, Oregon, Josy will give his all to make sure his dreams come true - even the ones he never thought possible.
Contains mature themes.

Queer romance with an adorable centre
warm funny sort of sequel to How to Be a Normal Person. Adorable slow burn awkward romance, set partly in the same gloriously eccentric town . Michael Lesley is perfection as the narrator.

Brilliant narrator/author combo
Can’t express how delightful it is to be able to immerse myself in a beautiful story without being jarred back into reality by a narrator reading the words Ugh or Oomph instead of making the noises those letters are supposed to make. I LOVE Michael Lesley and his brilliant voices. For one of my favourite authors to link with my favourite narrator? Absolute bliss.

A wonderful end to a duology!
I adored this audiobook! Michael Lesley wasn't the narrator of the first book but that was more than ok because he did real justice to these characters. Klune's book was so lovely and sad and just amazing, I cried and laughed a second later. Highly recommend this book and the first book in the duology!

Not liking this book would be like not liking a puppy
TJ Klune always makes me laugh but usually also kicks me in the soft spots a few times so I tend to approach his books with a mixture of love and trepidation. This book is a little different to the rest because it is mostly just... sweet. And funny. Really funny. I’d say it’s a slice of life love story, free from improbable misunderstandings, abusive ex’s or moustachioed villains (only moustachioed, stoner hipsters of good intent). It is perhaps a little heavy handed in its messaging at times but I didn’t mind that - the messages are nice, warm and ones about love, acceptance and the families we make. Read this book. It’s like freshly baked hash cookies for the soul.

Duuude!!! This stoner romance is so sweet and fun!
Josiah (Josy) Erickson is basically a very happy person without a mean bone in his body. It helps that he’s high A LOT. Apart from being in a few ads, Josy has never achieved his lifelong dream of being a movie actor. Being demisexual, he’s also found it hard to find that special someone who doesn’t immediately want sex. When he attends a poetry slam, he meets the nervously enigmatic author, Q-Bert, and before long he’s auditioning for his first film role. It took me a while to work out that Josy isn’t slow, his brain just works a little more tangentially than other people’s. There are loads of humorous insights and funny or sweet situations in this feel-good story about accepting yourself and valuing your friends. The people around Josy are either utterly frustrated or fiercely protective of him and there’s definitely an appeal to his laid-back approach. I loved this, and I smiled and chuckled heaps! Michael Lesley, the king of quirky audio, does a great job of channeling the stoner vibe as well as all the other quirky characters (currently free on the Audible Plus catalogue)!

Goofy but heartwarming in the best way.
This book was light, fun and unbelievably goofy. BUT it was also insightful and heartwarming. All characters were wacky, wonderful and so likeable.
Go into it lightheartedly and enjoy the ride.

Mixed feelings… a bit disappointed
I really enjoyed House in the Cerulean Sea and Under the Whispering Door but didn’t get as much enjoyment out of this one.
Josie is a likeable character, and there were definitely a lot of moments in the book that made me laugh out loud. The narrator also does an amazing job with the voices for the different characters.
But Quincy did not feel believable to me. The introverted nature of the character did not seem to agree with the more extroverted nature of his roles. Gustavo also seemed a bit one-dimensional as the sour, cranky character.
The ending also REALLY dragged out; it felt several chapters too long after the main crux of the story ended.
The anti religious tone was also a bit of a turn off - it felt more like the author speaking than the characters.
