A detective. As a fierce, unrelenting winter grips Quebec, shadows are closing in on Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. Most of his best agents have left the Homicide Department and hostile forces are lining up against him.
A disappearance. When Gamache receives a message about a mysterious case in Three Pines, he is compelled to investigate - a woman who was once one of the most famous people in the world has vanished.
A deadly conclusion. As he begins to shed light on the investigation, he is drawn into a web of murder, lies, and unimaginable corruption at the heart of the city. Facing his most challenging, and personal, case to date, can Gamache save the reputation of the Sûreté, those he holds dear and himself?

Revelations and Redemption
For fans of Three Pines mysteries - prepare for an even more engrossing tale where the stakes are higher than ever. As sinister and powerful forces conspire against Gamache, the characters of the alpine village find themselves in the crosshairs. As the Chief Inspector unravels the murder of an obsessively private woman, his closest associates must choose whether or not to side with Gamache in a battle with much broader implications.

Fabulous Addition to a Wonderful Series.
Usually series do not improve with each book but this one does. When I read the first book, Still Life, I was unsure if I would continue with the series. Of course, now I am so pleased that I did. The stories keep getting better, as with each book we learn more of our main characters and the mysteries in each book are also good.
If you have read the previous eight books you will not need any recommendation to grab this book. If you haven't yet read any of this series, I strongly recommend that you start at the first book, as each book builds on the relationships between Gamache and his team members.
Thank you Louise Penny for giving us another wonderful book in this fabulous series.

STUNNING!
I am reading all of the Gamache series in chronological order, as I was hooked from the first. I have been an avid reader all my life (now in my 60s), and while I have been hooked on a few good authors along the way, Louise Penny;s Gamache series has won my heart massively. It's hard to describe how impressed I am at her insight and incredible craft with the dialogue and general banter between the characters, especially when set in the village of Three Pines... the subtle humour woven in, the background knowledge in so many technical as well as general aspects of her story lines is truly stunning. This particular story has gripped me even more than any before it, and they have all been great, but I found myself holding my breath with anxiety and fighting back tears of joy in places, hardly able to bear to leave the story to get on with my own life, and returning to it at every possible opportunity. MUCH respect for Ms Penny indeed, and I already know I shall be totally devastated when I have finished the last instalment of the Gamache series, but am very glad I still have plenty to be getting on with for now.
