About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
The true story of a detective, two bronze horses and the dictator who set the world on fire.
When Detective Arthur Brand is summoned to a meeting with one of the most dangerous men in the art world, he learns that a clue has emerged that could solve one of the Second World War's unexplained mysteries: what really happened to the Striding Horses, Hitler's favourite statue, which disappeared during the bombing of Berlin.
As Brand goes undercover to find the horses, he discovers a terrifying world ruled by neo-Nazis and former KGB agents, where Third Reich memorabilia sells for millions of dollars. The stakes get ever higher as Brand carefully lays his trap to catch the criminal masterminds trying to sell the statue on the black market. But who are they? And will he manage to bring them to justice before they discover his real identity?
With a plot worthy of John Le Carré, Hitler's Horses is a thrilling retelling of one of history's most extraordinary heists.

A fascinating story vividly written and well narrated.
I happened to listen to the interview with the author on ABC Radio National recently.
So glad that Audible has this book.
Thanks

Great factual read
Loved story and Joe did it justice, but unfortunately there were intermittent "jumps" and "dead spots" in playback (not Joe's fault). Overall I'd give 4 stars.

Engaging listen
I really loved this telling of a real life mystery being unraveled. Intriguing and rewarding, it inspired me to research the various works of art and the author’s other discoveries.

I was enthralled from the beginning
Very well told true story despite the numerous characters and complex threads of investigation. Wonderful narration that really helps distinguish between the characters! Highly recommended!!

Very good
While browsing in my favourite bookstore - Riverbend Books, Bulimba I found this and cashed in a credit.
This is the true story of the hunt for Nazi sculptures, the "Walking Horses" by Josef Thorak, 2 @ 3m high bronze horses that stood at the entrance of the chancellery, thought to be destroyed in the extreme bombing of Berlin, & destruction by the Soviet forces.
Also the story of the 10-meter statue, by Arno Breker, that was to stand atop a victory monument at the end of the war, which thankfully did not happen.
This is an example of truth being stranger than fiction, Brand, the Dutch investigator author, discovers a photograph before the bombing with the horses not present and thus starts the hunt as this shows they were removed before the bombing and hence may still exist.
The search leads us to Nazi & Neo-Nazi groups who try to sell Nazi-era art to dodgy collectors to fund their activities such as defence of war crims and the pursuit of a 4th Reich.
A fascinating story of the hunt which concludes with the find in 2015.
