About this listen
#1 Bestseller in Women’s Crime Fiction.
#1 Bestseller in Organised Crime.
A little deer walks into the wolf’s den.
I want answers.
I know nothing of love, family, or stability, having been raised in the foster system and spat out at eighteen, pregnant, and with no memory of how that came to be.
I try to find my estranged father, a man rumoured to be in the Mafia, hopeful he will use his influence to discover what really happened the night someone took my innocence.
But I don’t find my father. I walk straight into the den of his associate, the Don of the Cosa Nostra.
Clay Butcher.
He is a cold, calculated killer. An emotional island in a perfectly tailored suit.
He orders me to stay in his mansion and wait for my father to return. But living with Clay Butcher stirs feelings deep inside of me. Starved of attention all my life, I find his possessive gaze intoxicating. His rules ground me, his discipline holds me accountable, and his praise sets my skin ablaze.
But he is a liar.
What I don’t know is that he plots to use me. I am not just the daughter of his colleague, but a girl with a powerful heir in her belly.
The heir to part of Clay Butcher's legacy..
Author notes: His Pretty Little Burden is part of The Kids of The District series but can be enjoyed without the previous books, although it follows a greater narrative and is the first book in a duet. It features a powerful Mafia Don and his endearing tortured heroine. His Pretty Little Burden has an age gap dynamic that some people may find uncomfortable. It is an epic romance story, with spice, and dark themes.
*Please check the tr!ggers on my website—authornicciharris.com. This book is very dark. *

A masterpiece of epic proportions
Where do I start…this book…my goodness! Quite simply: This is a masterpiece of epic proportions:
I absolutely loved His Pretty Little Burden by Nicci Harris. This book has it all: passion, suspense, drama, and an unforgettable love story between a powerful crime boss of the Cosa Nostra: Clay Butcher, and his endearing sweet heroine, Fawn Harlow.
I adore Nicci and her writing style is incredible, and she creates a world full of danger and intrigue that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Fawn is a sweet and innocent orphaned young woman who is pregnant and alone. Clay is a formidable figure in the world of organised crime, but also the Mayor of The District in Australia, when Fawn shows up at his door seeking protection, he can't help but feel drawn to her. Despite the age gap and the dangers that surround them, their chemistry is undeniable, and their romance is nothing short of epic.
The characters in this book are so well-developed that you feel like you know them personally. Fawn is a relatable and endearing character, and Clay is the perfect alpha male with a soft spot for his affectionately called: “Little Deer” – his pretty little burden. Their love story is intense and emotional, and I found myself cheering for them from the very beginning.
I adore Nicci & her writing style is incredible: This is one of the hottest Age-Gap dynamic I’ve read in a long-time.
Whilst this may make some feel uncomfortable, it really shouldn’t because although Sir Clay holds the power, & comes across as very controlling, it’s coming from a protective & caring place – he wants to give Fawn everything she never had & more – he wants to empower her, he constantly encourages her to use her voice & he always praises & absolutely worships her – he loves all of her, & is accepting to care for not only her, but her unborn child – fathered by another - Clay Butcher is a massive swoon-fest – the powerful mafia Don who wants nothing but to love this Sweet Little Deer.
The performances by Shane & Sofia elevate Nicci’s phenomenal storytelling to new heights. Shane's portrayal of Clay Butcher with his outstanding Australian accent showcases his versatility as a voice actor, & his powerful delivery perfectly captures the essence of a dominant & formidable crime boss. The authenticity he brings with his ability to capture the vibe in his Australian accent is unparalleled & can only be truly appreciated by Australians -- it's not an easy accent to master & Shane is a natural; I’m not exaggerating when I say he is THE BEST Australian Male voice in Romancelandia - End Of!
Sofia brings Fawn Harlow to life brilliantly, immersing listeners in her innocence, vulnerability, raw emotion & strength with her compelling performance. Together they ARE Clay and Fawn #Clawn!
The duet narration brings the characters to life in a way that feels intimate & immersive, creating an unforgettable experience.
The production quality is unparalleled, with special effects that are revolutionary & unique, capturing the essence of the story —it fees like I’m right there in the room with them. It is a testament to the talent& dedication of the cast & production team - quite simply the engineer is an absolute marvel!
KUDOS Nicci & cast! All the Pretty Little Stars!

Wow
What a mixture. Clay doesn’t know who is with him and who is against him. The trauma Fawn goes through, and all she wants is someone to love her. I love that the family pops in and out.
Narration was excellent.

Fantastic first book in Fawn and Clay's story
This was a great start to Fawn and Clay's story. I can't wait to read the next book straight away.
Even though she's young and seems soft, I enjoyed the way Fawn responded to Clay, throwing his words back at him when being cheeky.
Clay's whole persona was like catnip. I never thought I'd be happy to read a book where the MMC is married and not to the FMC, but it all just worked.
I read on Kindle and read along on Audible. Shane West just has the most amazing voice and sends shivers. Duet style narration, which is chef's kisses.

Entertaining
There were no surprises with this one. A very generic mafia romantic suspense. I don't particularly like the whole pregnancy trope. I'm interested enough to listen to the next book to see how it ends. Narrators were top-notch. enjoyed the Aussie accents.

As an Australian, I just couldn’t get into the accents 😆
I didn’t mind the story overall but I couldn’t take the Aussie accents seriously. Maybe because I am Australian, I feel the need to be transported overseas or something but this just didn’t do it for me. Sorry Nicci! I like the storyline - although very sad and I’ll try another title.
