Publisher's Summary

Part memoir, part history, part travelogue, this is the inspirational story of one woman’s journey in Cambodia.

When Romi Grossberg decided, at thirty-five, to give up her job as a social worker in Australia for a two-year contract in the slums of Cambodia, she could never have imagined that the experience would change her life forever.

Hip Hop & Hope is part memoir, part history, part travelogue, and completely engaging. Its portrait of Phnom Penh is complicated and indelible. Its story of work in an NGO is inspirational. At this hip hop youth centre, Romi evolves from a frightened burrung to a respected manager who knows the words, the tunes, and the moves.

This is the story of trust and friendship, faith, and belief in oneself even when the world is against you. NGO's founder KK, Romi, and their kids forge unbreakable bonds and eventually breakdance their way onto the TEDx stage and to sold-out performances in Australia.

Hip Hop & Hope will make you laugh and cry as Romi shares with brutal honesty the highs and lows of life for the forgotten in Cambodia.

Heartfelt stories from life in Cambodia

Loved this book, a great insight into the lives of Cambodian kids who are given opportunities to leave the world of gangs and drugs behind through their love of hip hop. The narration is so engaging, as the Australian author Romi recounts heartfelt and life changing stories from her experience working at Tiny Tunes (NGO) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Had me smiling, laughing and crying along the way, it really feels like you're there with them. Thank you for sharing this phenomenal story!

A must listen for long road trips in the car.

I have just finished listening to Hip hop and hope. I’m balling with the sadness of the desperate start these kids have had, Happiness for their personal growth and opportunities now available in their future. During sections of the audiobook I nearly had to pull off the road driving as I had Tears and chills all over! You can hear and feel the emotions in this audio book. A must listen for anyone who loves a story with in-depth characters and the story of one women’s expat experience working with street kids in Phnom Penh.

From the second I started listening to the book I just couldn’t stop!!! Such incredible insight into Tiny Toones and it’s talented and inspiring staff and kids. Also a wonderful glimpse into the Cambodian culture and way of life! Beautifully written and narrated. I think I need to listen to it again!!! Just so much to love about this book!!
