About this listen
New York Times best-selling author Hannah Howell breathes life into the enchanting beauty of the Scottish Highlands in this epic romance between a strong-willed captor and the striking young woman he both confines and protects....
The windswept Scottish Highlands hold great beauty, but also great danger. So when Aimil Mengue is abducted by a feuding clan, she is right to fear for her life - and her virtue. For Aimil's keeper is the infamous warrior Parlan MacGuin. Aimil sets out to hate him, but Parlan is more honorable - and infinitely more alluring - than expected. Though betrothed to another, Aimil cannot deny her startling desire for the man who holds her captive....
Parlan MacGuin knows well his reputation as a fierce warrior; he uses it to claim land and lovers. But beautiful Aimil is a different type of conquest. Now Parlan feels an unfamiliar longing for the woman he keeps at ransom as their forbidden passion threatens to spark an unstoppable blood feud - or forever fill their hearts....

I really liked the sharp retorts made by the heroine.
It was refreshing to read another author of Scottish times in the Highlands, one in which the heroine came from the Lowlands and thus caused room for arguments. The reader spoke a little faster than I am used to when listening to talking books. It was as if she didn’t pause for count of 2 between sentences but I accepted that this was a different reader and adjusted to her pattern. As the story unfolded I was glad to hear that the heroine was saved from a dreadful fate and all turned out well in the end.

Love and uncertainty
Love long term, people unsure to verbalise how they feel. The cruel violence to women and the men doing as they please. The goodness of most men to ensure protection of women at all costs.

trigger warning for abuse.
I listen to a lot of historical romance and realise that there was a lot of rape and ownership of women but this story just is too much of that. it's quite sad and becomes like a story of Stockholm syndrome rather than actual love.
