About this listen

From the best-selling author of The Circle comes a brilliant new black comedy about modern America.

A mother and her two young children rent a battered old RV (optimistically christened the Chateau) and embark upon a journey through the Alaskan wilderness. At first their trip feels like a vacation: they spot wild animals and build bonfires. But as they travel deeper into the forest, dodging wildfires and eccentric locals, we learn more of the events that forced them to escape their old lives in search of something redemptive out at the very edge of civilization.

Ultimately crashes but worth the ride

David Eggers is a wonderful wordsmith and Rebecca Lowman does a great job of breathing life into his story of a woman trying to escape her mundane life and cares. Eggers gets under the skin of the female protagonist and gives us lots to think about and lots of laughs along the way. There are occasional strange interludes such as Josie trying to compose a musical with a group of amateur musicians and the story goes off the rails at the end, but the journey is worth it.
