About this listen
Rescued by ruin, American heiress Daisy Vanreid is desperate to avoid marriage to the aging aristocrat her abusive father chose for her. She'll do anything, even entrap the notorious Duke of Trent into marriage, to escape her fate. Losing her heart to her handsome husband after the wedding isn't part of the plan. Nothing is as it seems.
An elite spy, Sebastian, the Duke of Trent, is on a mission to unravel bomb plots in England's cities. Forced to wed Daisy as part of his cover, he has no intention of falling in love with a woman suspected of treason. But he's drawn to the feisty beauty he married, and he can't deny the way she makes him feel, even though he knows she could be the enemy he seeks.
Duty versus love
As danger strikes, Sebastian must choose between Daisy and his loyalty to the Crown. And when Daisy discovers the truth at last, will she ever forgive him?
Contains mature themes.

Easy listen
After the first two books in the series, I had low expectations for this one. But this book was a significant improvement. The characters were much less one dimensional, and more believable for it.
I didn’t find Daisy and Sebastian’s story really fit in this series. I don’t even recall Daisy or Sebastian being mentioned in the earlier books. This book seems better places in the League of Duke’s series.
With a raft of new supporting characters in this book, I will likely seek out the story’s for Carlise, Griffin, Maggie and the Duchess of Leeds.
I enjoyed Sebastian being a spy and how the author weaved in the Special League, Fenians and Irish resistance. Sebastian was more likable for it, and his flipping back and forth regarding Daisy’s innocence felt realistic.
Whilst any book in the genre is fairly predictable and has a guaranteed a happy ending, there were a few things I didn’t see coming - including what made the League think Daisy was a Fenian.
I listened to this book as part of my audible membership, no credit required, but I wouldn’t have minded spending money to listen to the book.
I’m not a fan of the narrators voice, but it didn’t bother me as much with this book.
