About this listen

"Next of Kin" by Astrid Amara: Jay Yervant is a Hell Cop so powerful that his bare skin incinerates anyone he contacts. Isolated, he is tortured by desire, until he meets Brian, a sensual young man who touches him with impunity. But Jay's burgeoning hope is threatened when a malevolent sorcerer unleashes a host of demonic assassins against Brian. Keeping his lover may cost Jay his life.

"Red Sands" by Nicole Kimberling: Anthropologist Michael Gold's got problems. His apartment's been ransacked, his dad's missing, and he's been framed for murder. As a half-demon he expects trouble from the city's Hell Cops. Instead, he gets Argent, a man with intimate knowledge of Michael and whom Michael can't penetrate with his psychic powers. So does Argent want to clear him or expose him?

"Touching Sparks" by Ginn Hale: When photojournalist James Sparks discovers an underworld of sorcery, blood sports, and demonic drug traffic, he turns to Detective Ben Moran, a hard-bodied Hell Cop whose touch sends James's pulse racing. But when James uncovers evidence of police corruption he realizes that Moran may be in as much danger as he is.

Contains mature themes.

I really enjoyed those 3 short stories. All in the same universe but from different angles.

Three great supernatural action romances!

Hell Cop is a collection of three novellas set in the same supernatural world. In ‘Next of Kin’ by Astrid Amara, the Hell Cops investigate demon-related crime. When Hell Cop Jay Yervant meets Brian Day, he’s amazed to find that Brian can touch Jay’s skin without being burnt - that’s never happened before. Demons seem to be targeting Brian and Jay is determined to protect him. I thoroughly enjoyed this cop romance, the world build was interesting and fresh, Jay and Brian’s powers were fascinating, and their romance surprising as Jay had never been touched by another person. Tristan James is not my favourite audio narrator, I find his delivery articulate but wooden, and I rarely feel his voice suits the age of the characters. Having said that, he wasn’t bad here.

In ‘Red Sands’ by Nicole Kimberling, half-demon psychic anthropologist Michael Gold has a teleportation glitch which causes him to emerge with a dead body in tow. While Michael is the prime suspect, Hell Cop Argent can’t rule out that Michael might be the next target, and offers to protect him. Argent doesn’t mind hanging around Michael who is one of his more memorable one-night-stands. This enjoyable murder-mystery was more of a romantic police procedural as Michael and Argent question those who knew the victim to solve the murder. John Solo narrates with his usual perfection.

In ‘Touching Sparks’, Hell Cop Ben Moran uses young photojournalist James Sparks to infiltrate a demon-trafficking and illegal blood-sport ring. Although James’ undercover activities are dangerous, it’s Moran who ends up fighting for their lives in the arena. I liked the heightened spice of danger in this age-gap romance. Moran sees James as not much older than a kid until they’re thrown into a life-threatening situation. Audio narrator Kirt Graves is so good!
