Heidi who has been orphaned, is taken from her alpine home with her beloved grandfather by her less than loving aunt to be a companion for a crippled child of a wealthy family in Frankfurt. Johanna Spyri (1827–1901) was a Swiss novelist and short story writer, most known for her children's literature. Born in a rural area of Switzerland, Spyri moved to Zurich upon her marriage and in her homesickness, wrote her most famous novel, "Heidi" in just a month.
