About this listen

NOW A NO.1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Michael Mann, Oscar-nominated filmmaker and writer-director of Heat and Miami Vice, teams up with Meg Gardiner to deliver Mann’s first crime novel, an explosive return to the world and characters of his classic film Heat – an all-new story that illuminates what happened before and after the film.

A Times Book of the Year 2022

‘Michael Mann’s HEAT is one of my all-time favourite movies. HEAT 2 is now one of my favourite suspense novels’ JAMES PATTERSON

Described by Michael Mann as both a prequel and sequel to the renowned, critically acclaimed film of the same name, HEAT 2 covers the formative years of homicide detective Vincent Hanna (Oscar winner Al Pacino) and elite criminals Neil McCauley (Oscar winner Robert De Niro), Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer), and Nate (Oscar winner Jon Voight), and features the same extraordinary ambition, scope, rich characterizations, and attention to detail as the epic film.

This new story leads up to the events of the film and then moves beyond it, featuring new characters on both sides of the law, new high-line heists, and breathtakingly cinematic action sequences. Ranging from the streets of L.A. to the inner sancta of rival Taiwanese crime syndicates in Paraguay to a massive drug cartel money-laundering operation just over the border in Mexico, HEAT 2 illuminates the dangerous workings of international crime organizations and the agents who pursue them as it provides a full-blooded portrait of the men and women who inhabit both worlds.

Operatic in scope, HEAT 2 is engrossing, moving, and tragic – a masterpiece of crime fiction from one of the most innovative and influential filmmakers in American cinema.

As tense and entertaining as the movie

Fantastic theatrical narrating. Very good Pacino impression. The story was very worthy as an extension of the movie.

A worthy sequel to a great film

A great story, reminiscent of all that made Heat such an amazing film. My only sadness is that the original actors from the 1995 film are now too old to appear in the film adaption of this novel.

A worthy sequel

This was an excellent book for those who enjoy the movie “Heat”. It serves as both a sequel and a prequel. The voice of the narrator however is almost comical and reminds me of Christian Bale’s Batman….for 18 hours of narration !

A notable sequel

Although I felt the narration was quite 'macho' in the beginning, it fits the tone of the story. A well written and well narrated sequel to Heat

The most worthy of sequels

If Heat is a movie you can watch 3 times a year and never get sick of, Heat 2 is a must. If this was a movie, with Pacino, De Niro, Kilmer at the rest of them, we’d be talking about this with the likes of The Dark Knight and Godfather 2. Couldn’t recommend highly enough for any Heat fan.

Great story and narration

This was a surprising and worthwhile story that really opened up the heat universe. The narration is brilliant, and I think I will re-listen very soon.

Hot As

A brilliant addition to the movie Heat. Takes us back in time to set the scene for one of modern cinemas greatest on-screen pairings between Pacino and De Niro. Heat 2 is as good as the original. Brilliant performance by the narrator, too. Felt like I was listening to Pacino.

A superb sequel

Everything Heat fans could hope and expect. Fleshes out all the characters and delivers on suspense, action and crime strategy.

Gritty, well paced and glorious

That was amazing, the narration gave it a noir feel that took me a chapter to get use to but then I never wanted it to end. Now all I need is Pulp Fiction 2 and my 1995 wildest dreams have come true.
