About this listen

Paul Dolan shows us how to find pleasure and purpose in everyday life.

As a professor of behavioural science at the London School of Economics, Dolan conducts original research into the measurement of happiness and its causes and consequences, including the effects of our behaviour. Here he creates a new outlook on the pursuit of happiness - it's not just how you feel, it's how you act.

Happiness by Design shows that being happier requires us to actively redesign our immediate environment. Enough has been written on how to think happy. Happiness by Design is about how to behave happy and how to incorporate the most recent research findings into our everyday lives.

Critic Reviews

"Few books change one's life; in 48 hours this has improved mine.... Anyone who wonders if they are living their lives as fully as they might will find ideas worth thinking about in this engaging, persuasive book." ( The Sunday Times)
"Dolan makes a persuasive case that happiness might really be simple. His book is a powerful reminder not to get caught up in overthinking things, but to focus instead on maximising what actually delivers joy...and most of us would benefit from listening to him." ( The Guardian)

Life changing - this is the best by far

At last here is a book that provides you with concrete explanations and processes which you can implement in your life so that you can Experience and Evaluate Happiness differently. This is not some hyped up American Self Help Guru who's going to make broad sweeping 'compact takeaways' of how to get superficially PUMPED up about your life and be a Positive Genuis etc.. Paul's academic and Policy background enables him to present a cohesive and fact based approach that's refreshingly realistic. I can't wait to read his other books

great book,well read

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

this book is great for anyone who like understanding more about the human condition and likes arguments based on fact. some of the personal bits are tend to have a bit much of "im selling my idea " but in a way it makes it fit in with the self help style more than a technical report.

Which character – as performed by Jonathan Cowley – was your favourite?

good job, it made me feel like it was the author telling the story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes, logical themes that made me want to hear the next interesting bit.

Any additional comments?

I liked this much better than your average self help book, it has sound research backing strong logic set in the quirky life of the author. :)
